Web Design
Underclassmen that successfully complete Web Page Development have the option to enroll into Web Site Design and Production & Information Technology Internship the following school year. The primary focus of this course is to allow the students to take the skills and techniques they have learned in Web Page Development into a business type setting where they develop and improve web sites for businesses, churches and non-profit organizations. Routine maintenance is also provided throughout the school year and their service is free of charge although donations are accepted and obviously allow the students to realize the importance of their education and make the connection between school and career.
For students to learn, they need to be actively involved and engaged with the curriculum. Real world, ongoing projects are the best way to accomplish this.
Upon being assigned a web site to develop or locating an existing one that can be improved and/or updated, each student is required to make contact with the person they will be working with and begin to plan, organize and lay out the structure of the web site. In addition, they instruct the owner how to purchase hosting and a unique domain name for their web site. Typically, only basic level hosting is needed and we can provide assistance with this. Our students are very well-rounded in regard to their ability to develop website's and can use a number of editors/methods including HTML and CSS Coding, Dreamweaver, and Wix. They have the ability to generate photo galleries and dynamic content such as forms that allow clients to receive information from visitors and also collect payments and donations if needed. When the school year ends, the owner can either hire the student to maintain the site for them, or the next class can pick it up once school is back in session.
If you would like to have a web site or need your current one maintained, please contact the class instructor, Matthew Jones, at 606.574.2020, ext. 3597 or by e-mail at matthew.jones@harlan.kyschools.us. We require that a planning document be completed before we can begin your project. Please view/download the following to get started: Planning Document

Over the years, our students have completed a great number of websites for clients all over the United States. Many have been turned over and modified by the clients and are no longer listed below. The following websites have been published and there are a number of others still in production. The students have done a great job and are continually improving. Many of the sites that they completed at the beginning of the year are being re-designed and show vast improvements. We hope to get them published for viewing soon. Note that some of these are still under construction and if a page doesn't have much information, it is because we are still waiting on it ourselves or are in the process of getting it completed:
Harlan County High School is committed to educate every student to a high level, accept no excuses for failure, and understand the value of hard work by students and staff. Our culture of success will support systems in the school that encourage and even reward hard work.
