MissionThe mission of the Harlan County High School Media Center is to provide students with access to a vast supply of books and resource material while encouraging students to become active readers and literate members of society.

The Media Center provides a wide range of materials and resources for students to use. In return, students are expected to behave according while in the center. The center is a place of for students to read and to study, as such, students are expected to be respectful of others. Students are also expected to keep the level of noise low, and to show respect to the other students and the staff.
The Media Center of HCHS features a wide range of different books. This includes a large selection of fiction and non-fiction books as well as reference books, biographies, magazines and newspapers. We also offer a complete computer lab that is used daily to assist with research and general reading interests.
Books can be checked out for up to 2 weeks at a time. In order to check out a book, students must take the book to one of the staff members and they will precede to scan the books barcode. This, along with the students lunch number, allows the book to be checked out and recorded in the computer system. Students can also use their lunch numbers to take an A.R. test which are tests over the books students have read. Students take these on any one of three computers located at the front desk. Students can score from anywhere from a 0-10 and some English classes treat this test as extra credit.

Students with an overdue book will not be allowed to check out another one until that book is returned or renewed. Any student with a late fee, or a book they have not returned, will not be allowed to graduate unless the fee is paid and the book is returned.
Passes in the form of your teachers hall pass or a signed note by the teacher are required at all times during school hours to enter the media center. Before school students must have a pink slip giving them permission to enter the media center (before 1st period during the morning hours). Passes are not required during after school hours.
Students are welcome to use the media center’s printer for educational purposes. There are no fees to use the printer, so students don’t have to worry about having money with them.
