Harlan County Falls Short of Region Title
BARBOURVILLE — Locked in a pitchers duel against Harlan County's Conner Leisge in the 13th Region Tournament championship game Thursday at Knox Central, North Laurel sophomore Zach Hurley was still throwing smoke and hoping to finish what he started.
The sophomore right hander pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and one walk as North Laurel scored five runs in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 and win 7-2.
Harlan County (29-10) ended its best season with a 52nd District championship and a regional runner-up finish.
"We beat some good teams. We just came up short," Lewis said. "I thought they played well and got a lot better. We had 23 boys out there on the line in the first tournament game against Bell, and 19 of them had a 3.5 (grade point average) or better. I feel as a team, me and the coaching staff and all the boys, got better. The Harlan County Black Bears are better."
North Laurel will play 15th Region champ Prestonsburg on Monday at 1:30 in the first round of the state tournament in Lexington.
